Machine Learning Technology to Protect Kids Online
This is a guest post from our friends at Canopy
These days, no parents can claim ignorance to the destructive potential of screen time, social media, and online pornography on their young or teen children. But with so many options out there claiming that they can protect our families on the internet, how can one weed through them to find the most technologically advanced?
Enter Canopy. This parental control app was developed by an Israeli company called Netspark. Its technology, based on machine learning and artificial intelligence, is now installed on the computers of 90% of Israel’s schools! Among the religious population in Israel, there has been an awareness of internet dangers for many years now, and Netspark is a known and respected leader in the field.
Canopy was built by Netspark to appeal to an American audience. Like its Israeli counterparts, Canopy’s unique selling point is its ability to detect and block pornographic videos and images before they reach a child’s screen. It can even detect partial nudity and block it on otherwise acceptable websites - for example, it can remove pictures of lingerie models from a department store website, leaving the rest of the site untouched. These abilities separate Canopy from the pack - other parental control options generally operate off of white/blacklists of known websites.
AI-technology is also the basis for Canopy’s sexting prevention feature, which can detect inappropriate pictures not only being sent to a child’s phone - but even such pictures being taken on a child’s phone, allowing the parent to step in before the picture is sent to others! Additional features round out the parental control suite, including screen time management, location alerts, and removal prevention.
Canopy works on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and Chrome devices. It currently protects schools, families, and individuals (including adults with pornography addictions) across the United States.
