Triangle Park
One of 13 original professional teams, the Dayton Triangles played in the first-ever NFL game on Sunday October 3rd, 1920.
On an unusually warm day in the fall on October 3rd, 1920, Triangle Park hosted the first-ever National Football League’s game in front of 5,000 fans. Many interesting storylines existed with prohibition starting in the spring, a booming innovative town that had just risen back from a major flood, and the first time woman could vote along with the birth of the NFL. The Triangles, led by Coach Nelson “Bud” Talbott and Manager Carl “Scummy” Storck, played in and won the league’s first-ever game, notching a 14-0 victory over the Columbus Panhandles in front of 4,000 fans at Triangle Park. The contest and team intertwined with the events of the City of Dayton at that time. The area was experiencing an industrial boom that allowed Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (DELCO) to sponsor the Triangles, while an influx of immigrants contributed to the diversity of a team that included standouts Lou “The Battering Ram” Partlow, Lee Fenner, George “Hobby” Kinderdine, Norb “Saxy” Sacksteder and Walter “Sneeze” Achiu.
